How Devetry & ASU Help Refugees Access Online Learning

When Education for Humanity approached us about building a custom software solution for online learning, we jumped at the chance. Over the course of two years, we built a global online learning platform “from scratch,” launched in two phases to accommodate their MVP.

As of March 2020, approximately 2,000 learners from seven countries have participated in one or more of Education for Humanity’s courses. Devetry continues to partner with Education for Humanity to iterate and add functionality as technology becomes available.

The problem

Fewer than 3% of refugees across the world have access to higher education. Many live in remote camps with few learning opportunities. Others live in cities but they are unable to show proof of prior schooling credentials, or they cannot afford to continue their education. Because they’re not actively learning, they can easily fall behind, perpetuating the cycle of marginalization and poverty.

Refugees and other marginalized people need tools and opportunities to rebuild their lives after displacement. They need education and real-world skills (like how to start a small business in low-resource environments).

The Solution

Education for Humanity is an Arizona State University initiative that enables refugees and other marginalized people to learn new skills and find new opportunities. The program’s three distinguishing pillars are:

  1. Digital learning: All classes can be accessed from remote locations across the globe
  2. In-person support: Students can get additional support from ASU’s set of international implementing partners when they need it
  3. University credit: Any credits earned in the program can be transferred to schools that accept ASU credits.

Integration

Open EdX is a platform many large universities use to deliver online courses to students all over the world. Education for Humanity hosts a number of their classes on the Open EdX platform and Devetry built an integration from the E4H portal to allow learners to access the Open EdX hosted courses without having to login in two places.

Learners are granted access to courses on their dashboard and they can click a course’s card to be Auto SSO-ed into the Education for Humanity Open EdX instance.

Integration

Badgr is a tool used for granting digital credentials. Learners can take with them wherever their learning/career path takes them. Education for Humanity admins can grant these badges or certificates upon the completion of a course or program. The badges and certificates can be shared socially or via the Public Assertions Link. Devetry created an integration from the E4H Portal to Badgr so that E4H badges can be granted to learners directly from the portal and display in Badgr or on their Education for Humanity portal.

Future integration

Canvas is a web-based learning platform similar to Open EdX. A separate department will be building an API that Devetry can access and have similar functionality to the Open EdX integration. Students will be able to access the Canvas courses via the course cards in their E4H learner portal and automatically be logged in where they can access the course materials.

Working with Us

For Education for Humanity, Devetry built a proprietary software solution that brings multiple course platforms into one, accessible hub.

Having a fresh portfolio of accredited educational offerings at their disposal, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can bring new and meaningful educational opportunities to students they recruit into their programs.  ASU partners and learners can access this technology all over the world, in remote towns and makeshift computer labs.

Their students can access a variety of courses across Open EdX and earn badges, certificates, and transferable college credit upon completion.

These functionalities take place in one central online portal that is easy to navigate, even for users with limited digital experience

Background

Impact

Successful completion of Education for Humanity courses has led to acceptance in other educational programs, including into a Ugandan university with scholarships. Beyond transferring credits, locally relevant skills acquired in our courses have helped many improve their ability to generate an income.

Individual Success Stories

  • A mother was able to start helping her daughter with her schoolwork after an online English course.
  • A long out-of-school adult regained her confidence and motivation to continue her disrupted education after taking the “Be a Successful Online Learner” program.
  • A man at a partner organization felt better equipped to support refugee education programs after professional development coursework.

Creative Design Lead, Education for Humanity

We had high expectations of Devetry, and Devetry has exceeded them all, especially this last round of design and development. We had some project management and business analysis holes on our team, and Devetry expertly filled those holes with their own exceptionally diligent staff. Their entire team, from the top down, are very nice people who are a pleasure to work with.”
